Crusin' the Gordon...

Day 10

Today we went on a river cruise on the Gordon River.
We decided to go in the afternoon as the weather wasn't looking all that good for geocaching and the afternoons on the cruises are a bit quieter. It also included dinner so I didn't have to worry about what we were going to eat tonight.

We passed lots of these fish farms. They grow trout under ideal conditions, something about the mixture of fresh and salty water. They feed them 3 or 4 times a day and they grow very fast.
There were two stops on the way. Firstly at a rainforest where a guide pointed out different plants and trees. We finally know what a Huon Pine looks like and you never get sick of walking through the rainforest.

The next stop was to Sarah Island. A very interesting place but very sad too. The island was used to hold convicts before Port Arthur and was run by some cruel men who had some very inhumane practices. A lot of people died there.
This was our guide, her name is Janelle Payne. A very animated lady and a fantastic story teller. She made the visit to the island, she was quite funny.
Part of the ruins on Sarah Island. An old oven where they baked the bread... "but not for you lot, not for the prisoners. You lot only get the old hard, weevil filled loaves".....Janelle explained.

More ruins

The cruise went for 5 and a half hours, we didn't get back till 8pm.
